Dibyendu Berua became Grandmaster from the 1991 Duncan Tea Super GM Tournament organized by the club. The Kolkata International Grandmaster Chess Tournaments held over the last four years, now fulfill the need of players looking FIDE title norms. At its last edition, there were 34 Grandmasters, including three with ratings of 2700+ and 15 with 2600+. It was a strongest open meet in Asia.
The club hosted the 2002 Asian Individual Chess Championship incorporating the World Chess Championship qualifying tournament. The Telegraph Schools' Chess Championship was also has now seen its 23rd edition. At its 2011 closing ceremony World Champion Anand gave a 30-board Simul at the club. The club also organized the Telegraph Youth International in the year 1991.
From its inception in 1976, the club has emphasized great importance to chess coaching for youngstars at Gorky Sadan. Several all Bengal Open Tournaments, Benefit Chess Tournaments, Rapid Chess Tournaments were organized side by side. Coaching by foreign Grand Masters were also made available for talented young students of the club and GNCA."
