Round 10- Final Girish Koushik of St.Thomas School, Mysore expectedly annexed the crown
at 20th The Telegraph Schools’ Chess Championship being organized by
Alekhine Chess Club at Gorky Sadan, Kolkata. Already assured of the title because of his better progressive score
Girish took a quick draw against Hemant Sharma of Ramjhas School, Delhi. Girish is on a winning streak having won the Asian U-12 Championship and
National U-11 titles recently. He is also a former World U-10 champion. Sayantan Das of Scottish Church Collegiate School got the second spot
after defeating Aditya Chakraborty in a brilliant game.Even though
Sayantan did not get much out of the opening he drummed up an innovative
attack to weave a mating net. The top seed Satyajit Kundu of Vivekananda Mission School bagged the
third place after defeating Dhee Shankar of St.Mary’s Orphanage &
Day School. Diptayan Ghosh’s game against Aditya Chakraborty was awarded the
Parimal Mukherjee Trophy for the best game. The game was selected by
Grandmaster Neelotpal Das from amongst the several games that were
submitted for adjudication. The Best School Trophy was won by South Point School with St.Xavier’s
Collegiate School getting the Second Best School Trophy. Diptayan Ghosh was awarded a laptop by Alekhine Chess Club and Goodricke
National Chess Academy for winning the Asian U-10 Championship recently
and also for qualifying for the world U-10 championship later in the year.
India’s most successful Test Captain Sourav Ganguly handed over the
Champion’s Trophy to Girish Koushik.The other members of the Presidium
who handed over the 37 other prizes were Mr. V.V. Lazarev, Consul General
of the Russian Federation in Kolkata.Mr.Kumar Sankar Bagchi, President,
Alekhine Chess Club,Mr. Amitabha Datta , President, The Telegraph,
Mr.Alexander Mazirka , Director Gorky Sadan , Mr.Udayan Kanti Ghosh ,
