Today, 6^th Dec 2011, at 23^rd The Telegraph Schools’ Chess Championship organized by Alekhine Chess Club, Sponsored by Himani Sona Chandi Chyawanprash in association with NIIT guru, at Gorky Sadan, Kolkata, the final round of the meet was played from 10am to 2pm.

Sayantan Das (9) Schottish Church Collegiate School emerged as the champion in this year’s The Telegraph Schools’ Chess Championship by beating Suvankar Maity (8) of Behala Ashya Vidyamandir in the 10^th and final round of the tournament. Incidentally, this is the first time anyone performed a hat-trick in this tournament as Sayantan won the championship for consecutive three years.

In a Ruy Lopez opening, Sayantan as white emerged with a better middle game. After an eventual exchange of queens he had a clearly better end game. Sayantan made no mistake to convert it into a full point.

At borad number one, overnight joint leader, Diptayan Ghosh (9) of South Point School beat Suvradeepta Das (8) of Aditya Academy, Dum Dum in an Alekhine Defence. White could not equalize(!) due to some opening mistakes. The middle game quickly drifted into an end game where Diptayan’s better knight prevailed over white’s bishop and the State Champion won in 43 moves. Though Diptayan and Sayantan were on 9 points each after final round, Sayantan was declared the champion through the Buchholz System of tie breaking of FIDE.

At board number 3, there was an uneventful draw between Kumar Shanu (8) of DPS Dhanbad School and Sayan Bose (8) of Swami pranabananda Vidyapith in a close Sicilian variation, by transposition, no one could claim any advantage and it ended in a draw.

At board number 4, Kaustav Kundu (8.5) of South Point School won against Shiny Das (7.5) of Shishu Bihar HS School of Tripura, in a Giuoco Piano opening. Black obtained some initiative but later she missed 20….b6 which could win her a pawn. After this, white played cleverly to snatch a full point from the Under 13 Girls’ Tripura State Champion. Incidentally Kaustav Kundu stood third and Diptayan Ghosh was declared second.

The Prize Distribution ceremony of the meet will be held at Gorky Sadan on 7^th December 2011 (tomorrow) at 5pm. The following dignitaries have confirmed their presence so far during the Prize Distribution Ceremony of the meet :

Today, 5^th Dec 2011, at 23^rd The Telegraph Schools’ Chess Championship organized by Alekhine Chess Club, Sponsored by Himani Sona Chandi Chyawanprash in association with NIIT guru, at Gorky Sadan, Kolkata, the 9^th round games were played.

In the class of titans, Diptayan Ghosh (8) South point beat Sayantan Das (8) of Scottish Chuech Cllegiate School coming from behind, as he joined the fray one round later due to his coming from World Youth Championship held at Brazil, he overtook all obstacles and played at board number 1 today. He employed catalan opening but black went for sort of Dutch formation. Diptayan slowly outplayed his opponent and finally Sayantan, even tried for a piece sacrifice to obtain a draw in vain, and resigned on 40^th move.

The day saw two upsets at board number 2 and 3. At board number 2, Chandrasish Majumder (7) of St Xavires’ Collegiate School was defeated by Suvankar Maity (8) of Behala Asya Bidyamandir. Chandrasish (2177) took several risks to win the game but Suvankar (1823) kept his cool and avoided all pitfalls and finally managed to win in 48 moves.

At board number 3, another upset where Abhrapratim Manna (7) (2063) of Don Bosco, Park Circus lost to Subhradipta Das (8)(1814) of Aditya Academy , Dum Dum. In a better position, Abhrapratim made a blunder and lost the game.

Board no 4 – Kumar Shanu (7.5) of DPS Dhanbad drew with Kaustav Kundu (7.5) of South point school. White had a better position throughout but black somehow managed to hold the balance.

Board no 5 – Sayan Bose (7.5) of Swami Pranabananda Vidyapith won against Arna Sarkar (7) of Methodist School . It was a Ruy Lopez opening where both sides went for an all out attack for their respective opponents’ kings. In a tactical skirmish Sayan finally eked out a win in 27 moves.

Four players are leading with 8 points and the last round play tomorrow will begin from 10am. The prize Distribution ceremony will be held at Gorky Sadan on 7^th December 2011 at 5pm

Above 500 children from nearly 200 schools will participate in this meet.
It has attracted more than 120 Rated players.

Players from nine different states of our Country and neighboring countries from Bangladesh & Nepal will also take part.
However, Bangladeshi players are finding difficult to get VISA.

Sayantan Das is a former World U-12 Champion and the defending champion for the last two years.
Diptayan Ghosh is a former Asian U-10 &U-12 Champion.
Mitrabha Guha a former Asian U-8 Champion.
Smaraki Mohanty is a GOLD Medalist Under 13 Asian School Chess Championship at Srilanka 2010.
Shiny Das (Under-12 Girls) : 1st position Under-13 Girls Chess Championship 2011 in Tripura, 5th position Under-13 National Girls Chess Championship 2011.
